TRIANGLE POSE
Triangle pose, or utthita trikonasana, is a standing yoga pose that stretches the sides of the body, including the legs, hips, and torso. It is also a great pose for strengthening the legs, ankles, and core, and for improving balance and stability. To practice triangle pose, follow these steps:
HOW TO DO THIS
- Begin standing with your feet about 3 1/2 to 4 feet apart, with your feet parallel to each other and your arms at your sides.
- Turn your right foot out to the right so that your toes are pointing towards the top of the mat. Your left foot should be turned slightly inwards.
- Inhale and reach your arms out to the sides, parallel to the ground.
- Exhale and extend your right hand down towards your right ankle, while reaching your left arm up towards the sky.
- Keep your feet rooted into the ground and your gaze fixed on your left hand as you extend through your spine and lift your right hip towards the sky.
- Hold the pose for several breaths, then gently release and repeat on the other side.
BRIDGE POSE
Bridge pose, or setu bandha sarvangasana, is a yoga pose that helps to strengthen the back, core, and legs, as well as improve flexibility in the spine. It is also a great pose for reducing stress and fatigue, and for improving circulation and digestion. To practice bridge pose, follow these steps:
HOW TO DO THIS
- Begin lying on your back with your knees bent and your feet planted firmly on the ground, hip-width apart.
- Place your arms at your sides, palms facing down.
- As you inhale, lift your hips off the ground, pressing down through your feet and hands.
- Lift your chest and draw your shoulder blades together, keeping your head and neck relaxed on the ground.
- Hold the pose for several breaths, then slowly release as you exhale.
TREE POSE
Tree pose, or vrikshasana, is a standing yoga pose that helps to improve balance and strengthen the legs and ankles. It is also a great pose for increasing focus and concentration, as it requires a high level of mental and physical engagement. To practice tree pose, follow these steps:
HOW TO DO THIS
- Begin standing with your feet hip-width apart and your arms at your sides.
- Ground down through your feet and engage your leg muscles.
- Shift your weight onto your left foot and bend your right knee, placing the sole of your right foot against your inner left thigh. You can also place your right foot on your calf or ankle, or even on the ground if balance is a challenge.
- Bring your hands to your heart center in prayer position, or reach your arms up towards the sky.
- Gently press your right foot into your left leg and lift your arms above your head, keeping your gaze fixed on a point in front of you to help maintain balance.
- Hold the pose for several breaths, then gently release and repeat on the other side.
Tree pose is a great pose to practice as part of a yoga flow, or on its own as a way to improve balance and concentration. Just be sure to listen to your body and only go as far as feels comfortable, taking breaks as needed.
BREATHING METHOD
Here is a three-step breathing method for yoga:
STEP 1
Find a comfortable seated position, such as on a yoga mat or cushion. You can also sit in a chair with your feet planted firmly on the ground.
STEP 2
Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths in through your nose, filling your belly with air. As you exhale, gently contract your abdominal muscles to release the breath through your nose.
STEP 3
Begin to lengthen your exhalations slightly, allowing them to become a bit longer than your inhalations. As you continue to breathe in and out, try to keep your breath smooth and even, without any pauses or jerks.
This breathing method, known as "equal breathing" or "sama vritti," can help to calm the mind and bring a sense of balance to the body. You can practice this technique for several minutes at a time, and it can be especially helpful as a warm-up before starting your yoga practice.
